Dejan Pangercic
Hi there,

has anyone gotten a converter that exports vertices from PLY to points
in PCD format by chance?

Re: ply to pcd converter?

luca
Some time ago I wrote some python code for exporting vtk in ply format.
This function was a member of a personal implementation of vtkUnstructuredGrid class.
Color for vertexes is produced using vtkColorTransform.

def SaveAsPly(self, filename, arrayname='Intensities'):
intensities = self.GetWholeArray(arrayname)
maxint = np.max(intensities)
minint = np.min(intensities)
colormapper = vtk.vtkColorTransferFunction()
colormapper.AddRGBPoint(minint, 0,0,0)
colormapper.AddRGBPoint(maxint, 255, 255, 255)
pnumber = self.GetNumberOfPoints()
text_file = open(filename, "w")
text_file.write("ply\nformat ascii 1.0\ncomment VCGLIB generated\n")
text_file.write("element vertex " + str(pnumber) + "\n")
text_file.write("property float x\nproperty float y\nproperty float z\nproperty uchar red\nproperty uchar green\nproperty uchar blue\nproperty uchar alpha\nend_header\n")

for point in range(0, pnumber):
xyz = self.GetPoint(point)
color = colormapper.GetColor(intensities[point])
if point == pnumber:
string = str(xyz[0]) + ' ' + str(xyz[1]) + ' ' + str(xyz[2]) + ' ' + str(int(color[0])) + ' ' + str(int(color[1])) + ' ' + str(int(color[2])) + ' 255 '
else:
string = str(xyz[0]) + ' ' + str(xyz[1]) + ' ' + str(xyz[2]) + ' ' + str(int(color[0])) + ' ' + str(int(color[1])) + ' ' + str(int(color[2])) + ' 255 \n'
string = string.replace('.',',')
text_file.write(string)
text_file.close()

Hope can help as first start.

Nizar and I are building the new PCL IO library which will accept readers and writers for a variety of different
formats. This might be on the roadmap for 1.1.

Cheers,
Radu.

Actually my main issue is that I want to convert CAD files to PCD files, I can convert the CADs to Obj, Ply or STL. Does anyone have a suggestion on which format is easiest to convert? Or is PLY the best?

Thanks,

Won't OBJ be the simplest? Considering how closely it resembles PCD already.

Re: ply to pcd converter?

nadia figueroa
Sorry I'm a bit new dealing with these data files. For your suggestion Prateek, for example the obj gives me a list of vertices and faces, then the only thing I would need to do is read the vertices from the obj file and feed them as points to the pcd file right? I don't need to do anything with the faces or should I?

Thanks in advance

Re: ply to pcd converter?

In reply to this post by nadia figueroa
Nadia,

here it it: http://code.cs.tum.edu/indefero/index.php//p/mapping/source/tree/master/pcl_cloud_tools/scripts/convert_ply_to_pcd.py

Run is as "python convert_ply_to_pcd.py input.ply output.pcd".

Please note that the script only copies x, y and z coordinates of
vertices and only generates V7 of pcd.
I can definitely extend if it turns out that it does not work for you.

cheers, d.

Re: ply to pcd converter?

Hi,
The PLY read/write is now complete and exposed in trunk.
Please note that it requires boost::iostreams.

Enjoy,

Hi,

      Could you provide at least one example to show how to read the ply file and convert it to PointCloud class?

              Cheers.

Re: ply to pcd converter?

kikko_fr
Hi bittnt,

You can have a look at /tools/mesh2pcd.cpp that does that.
If you just want to convert your ply files to pcd without special requirement, you can do it directly with the app /build/bin/mesh2pcd.

Cheers,

Re: ply to pcd converter?

Hi,

could you please exatly tell how this should work?

Command mesh2pcd does not work when I call it directly, do I have to make some compilation first? sorry for the stupid question, I'm absolutely new in PCL

Best regards,

Irina

Hello,

If you are using PCL trunk, update your local repository (git pull), compile and install PCL again.
You will get the pcl_converter program which allows to convert files with multiple format choices.

If you are not using PCL trunk, compile this program as a standalone program, you will find the code here:
https://github.com/PointCloudLibrary/pcl/blob/master/io/tools/converter.cpp

Bye
