image edge detcetion to point cloud

hend helal
hiii , i was wondering if you could help me , i am doing a project using
point cloud , the idea of my project is to make an application that takes
2d image of a building from the user , and the application automatically
detects the edges of the building and generates the 3d model of the building
in the image , my challenges are the auto detection of the edges and
transforming them to point clouds , so i was wondering is this possible ,
and what are the methods i can use for this , and also can i transform the
point clouds to ifc or not?

If you make the assumption that the building has a specific shape (ex: a box), then you could fit the box position, orientation and size according to the detected edges.

The problem is I didn’t figure out yet how I am going to detect the edges of the building form the image , and after the detection how to transform them to point cloud?

  • detect edges in 2D image in image plane
  • these edges define a frustum (in case of perspective camera) or a prism (orthographic camera) that you can use to project/intersect in 3D space where your point cloud resides

I am sorry but I don’t totally get you , let me re explain my project for you , i am supposed to make an application that takes an 2d image of a perspective or an elevation of a building from a user and produce a 3d model of the same building by auto detection , what I have reached that I need to detect the edges from the image and transform them to point cloud and then generate the 3d model of the building which I don’t know how 😃

So any help 😃

OK, what I understood first is that you had a point cloud AND a 2D image to be projected onto the point cloud.

What I understand now from your last mail is that you ONLY have 2D image(s), and want to derive a 3D model from those image(s). Is that correct?

If that is the case, you can derive certain 3D properties but with just a single image your solution will not be unique, and best is to combine several images from different viewpoints. A classic book on that topic is "Multiple View Geometry in Computer Vision" by Richard Hartley and Andrew Zisserman, http://www.robots.ox.ac.uk/~vgg/hzbook/

Another useful reference with free software library links is to be found in http://imagine.enpc.fr/~marletr/publi/RRPR-2016-Moulon-et-al.pdf

As far as my experience with PCL goes, to derive point clouds from stereo images is a bit beyond the topic of PCL (other list users/owners, please correct me if I am wrong), and references above should at least point you in the right direction...

If you just need certain features from your building I would suggest something like:
  • determine camera model geometry
  • extract features from 2D images (edges, maybe better keypoints using some descriptor like SIFT or SURF). For 2D image processing, OpenCV is a standard, see https://docs.opencv.org/2.4/modules/nonfree/doc/feature_detection.html. These keypoints are points that are easily identifiable (usually corners of high contrast) that can be matched in different images.
  • Using matched keypoints in different images and using the camera models of the cameras used to make the images, you can then determine the 3D world coordinates of those points

There may be many other ways to do it depending on your data and the result you expect.

 

As for the IFC, I am far from being an expert, and I did not know you could embed a point cloud into an IFC file.

 

Now, this looks like a huge project...

Then after the edge detection , how will I change them to point cloud, or is there something better I can use , to generate the 3d model, and also do you know is it possible to change point cloud to ifc?

The problem is I didn’t figure out yet how I am going to detect the edges of the building form the image , and after the detection how to transform them to point cloud?

Hello hend helal,

 

If you make the assumption that the building has a specific shape (ex: a box), then you could fit the box position, orientation and size according to the detected edges.

hiii , i was wondering if you could help me , i am doing a project using

point cloud , the idea of my project is to make an application that takes

2d image of a building from the user , and the application automatically

detects the edges of the building and generates the 3d model of the building

in the image , my challenges are the auto detection of the edges and

transforming them to point clouds , so i was wondering is this possible ,

and what are the methods i can use for this , and also can i transform the

point clouds to ifc or not?
