Yes, there's a lot of work in PCL that either addresses this explicitly, or gives you the option to clean up your data
before proceeding (e.g., PassThrough).

That is because most of them come from Computer Graphics communities, where redundant vertices do not make too much
sense. We started this work from a "robotics"/mapping POV, and things are different here
