Ellipsoid fitting

Hello everybody,

just a quick question. I'm working on object size estimation, and I have a point cloud describing roughly the contours of my object. I've seen that in Moving Least Square there is the possibility to set the property "polynomial fitting" (but nothing that provides the characteristics of the polynomial), and I was wondering if there is something for ellipsoid fitting that retrieves also the main properties of the computed ellipsoid (axes dimension and pose, or even the coefficient of the ellipsoid in its standard formula).

Ilaria,

I don't think we have an ellipse model yet. However, now that you brought it up, it shouldn't be super difficult to add
one to our sample_consensus model library. In addition, we could think about fitting super-quadrics as well. I might
have some old code that I could dig up as a starting point, or perhaps we could aim for this being a GSOC'12 project. Alex?

Hi, there.

I'm trying to fit a model to some everyday items like a bottle.
Recently, I found this thread.
So I want to know whether there is already some class to fit with the
super-quadrics model in PCL.

Anybody know that?

Thank you for your information.

It seems to test just general quadric models (i.e. circle, sphere,
cylinder), and no super-ellipsoid...
I've known that these general models have available equations or method to
solve parameter of model from points or normal vector.

I'm trying to understand and researching how to fitting a bottle with
super-ellipsoid from the following URL.
But it is a little bit troublesome for me to implement as a prototype.

So I expected that there is some snippet to check effectiveness.
Do you or anybody know whether these code or snippet are available for that?
